Get your own Google Glass, just by knowing somebody who's got one

If you've been dying to get your hands on Google Glass, especially since your buddy won't shut up about his, you just might have a shot at one of your own. Google has announced (to those who already have Glass) a new invite a friend option into their Glass Explorer Program. Mind you, that's just for an invitation to buy the beta product, which still costs $1,500.

The catch is that it's an "invite a friend" not an "invite everyone you know on Facebook" program. Just one person will get that golden ticket from each Glass-wearing friend. And it just wouldn't be sporting if there weren't other caveats to boot. If you do get that invite, you'll also have to get your butt to either San Francisco, Los Angeles or New York so that Google can personally hand you your new toy. You also need to be at least 18 and a US resident.

Google Glass battery add-on might triple its battery life

Owners of Google Glass like to talk about how amazing the mini display is, and how responsive the voice command is, even in noisy areas. But beyond these wearable computer innovations there remains the issue of practicality in terms of everyday usage. According to many Glass owners, the battery life of the device is limited, allowing for only short bursts of video recording before the device needs a full recharge. One inventor has come up with what could be the perfect solution to the device's power consumption issues.

Designed by inventor Kevin Alan Tussy, PWRGlass is an external battery pack being promoted as an add-on to Glass that would triple its battery life. And while he is only showing off a 3D rendering at this point, Tussy claims that the device will pack a 2,000mAh lithium batterie and have the ability to allow a user to charge both the add-on and Glass simultaneously via one USB cable.

Explaining the inspiration behind the product, Tussy said:

"There are so many great apps for Glass in the works, people are going to want to use it all the time. But you can't use it all the time because of battery life. I saw the need and solution as soon as the internal Glass battery died on me. I got to work and had the design for a battery-packed retainer strap in my patent attorney's hands that same night."

The inventor is also exploring another version of the device that would add more storage capacity to Glass (currently limited to only 12GB of internal storage). No price or launch date has been announced, so at this point we can only view this as a concept device, but if it becomes a reality it would almost certainly be popular among Glass users looking for a little more juice to power their life-streaming

Google prototyping real-time universal translator device

Language barriers suck. They suck so much that Hollywood has long used them as a foible in romantic movies. Sci-fi, of course, has long had a fix for such problems: the universal translator. Most iconically utilized in Star Trek, the device is about to step off the silver screen and into reality.

Google has been developing its translator software for quite a while, but the tech giant now claims to have working prototypes of a real-time, vocal translator device, which is approaching 100 percent accuracy. Someday soon, Google will simply have an app for language barriers. Some language translations, English and Portuguese for example, seem to be nearly ready for market.

One of the challenges facing Google's real-time translator is the difference in syntax, or the ordering of words, from language to language. Even if its translator is successful, real-time translations might sound more like talking to Yoda than the picture-perfect translators seen in Star Trek. Maybe it's this issue that leads sources at Google to state that the universal translator is likely still a couple years away.

By then, Google hopes to not only be able to translate for you seamlessly, but to practically read your mind, anticipating your every need. Google also hopes to swap their basic search engine out for something more akin to Star Trek's semi-sentient computer. Talk about boldly going where no one has gone before

Smartwatch lets you control it using simple gestures

We've seen the clever combination of Google Glass and the Tesla. And we've witnessed the amazing combination of the Occulus Rift with a flying drone. But in terms of practicality, not all mashups offer the best mileage per astounding feature. However, a new combination of gesture control and the emerging space of smartwatches just might deliver a truly practical innovation combination.

The Hot Watch smartwatch is a device that allows you to control some of its functions via simple gesture controls. With just a wave of the hand, the smartwatch allows the user to answer a call, reject a call, or dial a favorite number. There's also a function that automatically dials an emergency number if the wearer suddenly falls down. In addition to calling functions, the Hot Watch also supports apps for SMS messaging, as well as weather, stock, pedometer, and social networking.

Another ingenious feature is the private call feature, which uses a directional speaker to reflect a call's sound from the palm of your hand. With the ability to connect via Bluetooth to an iPhone or Android phone, the water resistant device also comes with an e-ink display that accepts swipe and tap inputs.

The final retail version of the device will cost $169 for those not pledging early support on the company's Kickstarter campaign, and estimated delivery time will be this December. As of this writing, the Kickstarter already has over $58,000 in funding towards its $150,000 goal. And the campaign still has 37 days to go. Only time will tell if this idea will pan out or end up like the Pebble.

Life-sized, human holograms could soon grace your living room

"HOLOVISION: A Life Size Hologram is the subject of an intellectual property dispute and is currently unavailable."

Whether it was Princess Leia or the shark from Back to the Future 2, there was likely a movie moment that made you wish holograms were not only real, but that you could have one. And while hologram projectors exist in today's world, they're far from a universally accepted bit of tech. But now, one of the leading names in hologram projection is hoping to create something that we'll all want to own: a human-sized hologram.

This is not some projected-on-glass quasi-hologram, either. HoloVision, as the product is being called, promises to be a free-floating, life-sized image which will hover an impressive eight feet from its projector. That's better than R2D2 can muster. It'll also be full color, leaving the astromechs of science fiction squarely in the dust.

There will be limitations, however. It's easy to think that a life-sized human being, standing in your living room, would be capable of giving you a hug, for instance. But if that breakthrough is coming, it hasn't arrived yet. Holodeck creations these are not. And images projected through the magic of HoloVision won't be able to follow you into the kitchen for a snack either — not unless you've got a whole network of HoloVision cameras, anyway.

But with those limitations aside, HoloVision really seems like it could become a part of our lives — if it comes to fruition. The company behind HoloVision, Provision 3D Media, is currently running a Kickstarter in the hope of raising $950,000 to bring the tech to life. And while a human-sized hologram is their current goal, Provision sees the future of their products as being as large or small as we need them to be, entirely interactive, and fully integrated into our daily lives. Basically, they want to give us all Tony Stark's workshop. (But that's down the line.)
