Samsung Galaxy S4 benchmark shows eight-core processor and 13MP camera

Sammy's upcoming superphone appears to be packing some high-end specs, with speedy performance to boot. Anyone else surprised?

The Samsung Galaxy S4 hype continues. Shortly after its teaser video this morning comes the results of a benchmark reportedly run on a Galaxy S4 handset.
The Antutu benchmark lists the Galaxy S4 as having the long-rumoured Exynos 5 Octa processor with four main 1.8Ghz cores and four low power ones. The Galaxy S4 also appears to support all major networks with the latest Exynos processor, making it a true world phone while its predecessor the S3 was running Qualcomm and Exynos innards in different regions.
Still, there have been rumours of niggling problems with the Exynos 5 prior to the S4's launch, so there could still be a few Qualcomm handsets in the pipeline. But we digress. There's also mention of a 13MP camera which matches up nicely with our predictions.
2GB of RAM and the long-rumoured 4.99in full HD display also make an appearance in the benchmark notes, making the S4 a powerful beast, on paper at least.
Here's hoping all that delicious hardware is wrapped up in something other than plastic. It'll have to be, if Samsung want to roll with the drool-inducing builds of the Sony Xperia Z and HTC One. Roll on March 14th...

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active officially unveiled

The Samsung Galaxy S4's tougher cousin has arrived – packing waterproof strength with S4 smarts
Samsung has officially unveiled its ruggedised version of the Galaxy S4, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active.
The toughened-up version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 adds IP67 level water and dust proofing – meaning it can sit at the bottom of your bath for 30 minutes before it needs to come up for air. It also features physical Home, Back and Menu buttons instead of the S4's capacitive buttons – handy for those outdoorsy types who are likely to be wearing gloves while using it.
The phone's innards include a Galaxy S4-style 1.9GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage (with a microSD slot that'll add up to 64GB), Bluetooth 4.0, a 2600mAh battery and a 5in 1080p display that yields up an impressive 443ppi.
The Galaxy S4 Active only features an 8MP main camera instead of the standard Galaxy S4's 13MP snapper – but it does come with a new Aqua Mode made for shooting underwater pictures and videos. This camera app can be opened quickly and activated using the volume buttons – which can also turn on the LED as a backlight for low-light recording. Round the front there's a 2MP camera for video calls.
The Galaxy S4 Active comes with all the same features as its less macho cousin, including Smart Scroll, Smart Pause, Air View, S Translator and S Health.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active will come in Urban Grey, Dive Blue and Orange Flare later this summer. Expect a firm release date and price to be announced at the official event on June 20th.

Samsung Galaxy Note II now on sale

Samsung's super-sized smartphone has finally made its way to the store shelves of Vodafone, Optus and Virgin Mobile.
The successor to Samsung's original big-screened beauty can now be purchased on plans with Vodafone, Optus, and Virgin Mobile.
The standout feature on the Galaxy Note II is its huge 5.5" HD Super AMOLED screen - a full two inches larger than the display on the Apple iPhone 4/4S. It also comes with a stylus that you can use for drawing on the screen, a massive 3,100mAh battery, and a unique "multi-window" feature that lets you run two apps simultaneously in a split screen.
Otherwise, the Note II is very similar in design and spec to the Galaxy S III 4G, with 4G LTE, a 1.6GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, NFC, Android 4.1 and an 8-megapixel camera.
Vodafone will start selling the Galaxy Note II today (in-store and online), with plans starting at $50 per month (includes $180 of credit, 200MB of data, $70 worth of Vodafone to Vodafone and 3 calls). It can also be had for $0 upfront on the $80 plan, which comes with 2GB of data, unlimited calls, unlimited text, and $80 of credit for calling voicemail and premium numbers.
Optus is selling the Galaxy Note II online and through telesales. Plans start at $50 per month (includes $200 of credit, 200MB of data, unlimited social media access), and it’s available for $0 up-front on the $99 Optus Timeless Plan (unlimited calls, unlimited text and 3GB of data).
Virgin Mobile currently has the best deals going for the Galaxy Note II. Plans start at $49 a month (includes $250 of credit and 250MB of data), and you can get the phone for $0 upfront on the $89 Topless plan, which comes with unlimited calls, unlimited text and 4GB of data.
All Virgin Mobile plans come with free calls to other Virgin Mobile users, free voicemail and unused credit being rolled over to the next month. There’s also a special right now where you get three months free off if you buy the phone online.
The bad news is that Virgin Mobile is currently out of stock, and won’t be getting any more Galaxy Note IIs in until next month.
If you’re holding out for Telstra, you’ll have to wait a little longer as well, as the carrier won’t be selling it until “early next year”.
